The Delaware Academy of Medicine is a private, nonprofit organization founded in 1930. Its mission is "To enhance the well-being of the community through education and the promotion of public health". It is now located at 4765 Ogletown-Stanton Rd. (Route 4) in Newark, Delaware. Under the leadership of executive director, Timothy E. Gibbs, MPH, the Delaware Academy of Medicine became Delaware's affiliate to the American Public Health Association in November of 2013 - thus becoming the Delaware Public Health Association. The new name is the Delaware Academy of Medicine / Delaware Public Health Association, or Academy/DPHA for short. The Academy offers a range of services to the general public including: consumer health libraries in all three counties of Delaware, book and literature search services, public health information forums, a range of "members only" services, student financial aid, and various training programs. The Academy/DPHA serves the general public directly as well. It makes its health information resources accessible to everyone in many ways, including professional reference librarian service, the Gail P. Gill Consumer Health Library of popular medical books. It also holds lectures and seminars to educate the public on important health topics; such as the Delaware Mini Medical School a jointly operated program of the Academy/DPHA and Christiana Care Health System. The Academy/DPHA also has a 11,000+ item archives and history collection of medicine, dentistry, and public health in Delaware. Public health initiatives of the Academy/DPHA include operation of the Immunization Coalition of Delaware, the Delaware Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment initiative, and many other advocacy efforts conducted in partnership with other public health institution and nonprofits on a local, regional, and national basis.
